How to Be/Become the Sky
2025
approximately 600 acrylic and glass 2-inch circular mirrors in multiple formations, 8 x 8 foot mylar sheet
The Sky Iterations are an exploration in mimicking, creating, utilizing, and becoming one with the sky through different materials and methods. In the first stage of ‘How to Be/Become the Sky’, I undertook this becoming exploration primarily by reflecting the sky. I used two different reflective surfaces: small, flat, organizable pieces of the sky (round mirrors), and a large flexible segment of the sky (mylar sheet). Using small pieces I was able to build the sky myself, piecing the sky together like a puzzle. Using a large sheet I was able to enter the sky more directly with my entire body, and thus become a part of it. After these initial investigations, I wanted to figure out if I could possibly bring these components of the sky that I had perhaps made, perhaps interacted with, indoors. In the installation, I juxtapose projected, and thus glowing, photographs of the project’s first phase with an indoor sculptural installation that mimicked and combined the qualities of the outdoors works. I projected photographs of the sky onto this sculpture, so that the materials that had been used outdoors were in a sense still illuminated by the sky. The resulting work is a combination of initial reflections of the sky, projections of those reflections, and reflections of those projections of reflections. (haha)
