How to Touch the Sky
2025
Leather gloves, assorted glass mirrors, double-sided tape, hand, and sky.
Using reflection to try to touch and probe the unreachable ether.
Through each new iteration, the sky is shown to be a broader category than before. The sky is picturesque and sublime, hovering above the trees. But, the sky also touches suburbia, city streets, and … everywhere else. Everywhere is the sky.
Although I made this Sky Iteration after Iterations 2 and 3, it in many ways feels like my first work. I had the idea early on, and it is thus disordered in time, so returning to it as the end/beginning created a deep sense of nostalgia. It is symbolically the most obvious of the Sky Iterations, I think. By creating the work so delayed in time, I realized how much my relationship with and understanding of the sky had changed since its conceptualization. This is something that reflection could do, that the sky could do, but now I knew they could do much more. I just had to touch them to find out. ‘How to Touch the Sky’ was like this touch, just disordered in time, and so reflective! (Hah.)
